Born in Zaragoza, Spain, Luis Tabuenca is a versatile composer and percussionist known for his innovative work in contemporary music. He studied in Zaragoza (CSMA), Barcelona (ESMUC and UB), Amsterdam (CvA) and San Diego (UCSD), where he was mentored by Steven Schick, Lissa Meridan, Philippe Manoury and Mark Dresser, among others. Tabuenca also enriched his training by attending master classes and workshops with notable composers and performers such as Rebecca Saunders, Carola Bauckholt, Christian Dierstein, Tristan Murail, Miquel Bernat and Alexander Schubert.

What distinguishes Luis Tabuenca is his exceptional ability to combine composition and improvisation in his work. His collaborative spirit has led to innovative interdisciplinary projects that transcend the boundaries of traditional art forms. He has collaborated with artists and musicians from diverse genres and disciplines, pushing the boundaries of artistic creation. His catalog of works includes opera, sound installations, video installations, dance music, ensemble music, chamber music, solo and site-specific works.

Throughout his career, Luis Tabuenca’s compositions have been acclaimed and recognized internationally, being performed in festivals by renowned performers and by his own ensembles. His music has been recorded on labels such as Mode Records, Aural Terrains, Diatribe, Verso, Sinkro, Naucleshg and Acheulian Handaxe Records.

Luis Tabuenca’s work goes beyond music making. He is also the co-founder/director of the International Festival of Experimental Music (FAT, 2011-2017) and has held the role of Artist in Residence at institutions such as New York University, the Electroacoustic Music Days Festival in Portugal, the University of Canterbury, the Phonos Foundation and Fabra i Coats: Fábrica de Creació, among others.

His creative efforts have received the support and recognition of various organizations, such as the Fulbright Commission, the Spanish Ministry of Culture, the Governments of Aragon and Catalonia, the Institut Ramon Llull and the BBVA Foundation.

Tabuenca’s commitment to sharing his knowledge and experience is evident in his lectures and workshops at universities and cultural institutions, such as the Hochschule der Künste Bern (Switzerland), the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, the American University in Cairo and the New York University.
